UPDATE: this tutorial has gotten a lot of attention since i posted it 2 years ago.. so i decided to update the information, add information and even a nice video tutorial by andredk which is a little long, but very detailed. i updated the old journal and submitted a new one for good measure =)
VIDEO TUTORIAL

installing litestep is not a big deal. it has dependencies like any other application, and without them it will error. assuming your system meets all the requirements right now you can stop reading this and install litestep using the Omar Installer. (omar is the guy who created the installer) litestep was built using the x86 architecture so a x86 system is a prerequisite, however people have managed to install and use litestep on x64 systems.

before you install litestep on any system you need to be sure you have the microsoft Visual C++ runtimes installed. just install all the redistributable packages! save yourself some headache. 2005 2008 2010
afaik litestep has noting to do with .net, but its probably a good idea to install 2.0 and 3.0

if you're on XP congratulations! use Omar's installer or LOSI (i've never successfully setup litestep using LOSI.. then again i only tried once ;) )

if you're on Windows 7 these 3 additional steps are important.

(1: ) if you have installed LOSI (and litestep gives you errors) remove it. install litestep using the Omar installer found here www.crystalxp.net/galerie/en.i…

(2: ) upgrade your litestep files to litestep 0.25.0 alpha. (apparently some kind dev's hooked this up back in 09 when vista was crucified and windows 7 emerged, aero, king of super(task)bars. whatever, pft. i'm not a developer, i'm not even sure what all they did(i'm too lazy to read)but you need it)

(3: ) install jDesk version 0.74 and edit your theme.rc so that it uses 0.74. (most modern litestep themes use jdesk 0.73 <<this was true.. 3 years ago.) if you get a modern theme that uses 0.74 it should download and install 0.74 automatically, but if you're using an old theme on windows 7 edit the theme.rc

that should do it. use the utility to set litestep as shell and reboot. if you need any extra help feel free to shoot me a note and i'll help if i can

xPaintClass is modern litestep. we all use the xmodules particularly xLabel, to design litestep interfaces. the modules are amazing. very easy to configure and use. if you download a modern litestep theme you will need to install xPaintClass so that the xmodules can do their thing. follow the link for information. xPaintClass is just a dll. no big deal. the difference between it and basically every other module is that xPaintClass goes in your root litestep directory, not in the modules directory. and that's it! drop that dll in the litestep folder, and load a theme.

you may have to find and manually install some of the modules if you are getting errors when a theme loads

Yes x64 ,was looking for a solution for long time .. was keep Restoring My Laptop like .. lets say 10 times a week ,by tryng to fix that by my self so here we go.

All the solution that you`z can find on web ,are pretty good (non worked perfecly or didnt work at all)and thats how i found this by my self.

Dont be worried about this long note,i gist tryed to make it more explicit since my english isnt pretty good.

Step by step (it sounds dummy and stupid but its works damn good)

1.Install all the Net Framework Updates Located In Your Windows Update.
2.Ofcourse Reboot.
3.Install Litestep ... "now wait a sec ,dont gist install it ... change file path when installing to simple x64 Program Filles Location.
EX : Used to install it like everione over here : C:\Program Files (x86) "WRONG"
Install It In C:\Program Files
HERE GOES THE COOL EASY AND LAST PART.

Please Note that doesnt work straight away ,do it 2 times because the path that your goning to change in the registry will change back to normal ,and i dont kno why .. but at the second or 3th try it will remain like that and everithing will be perfect.

Go to Windows Folder And Look for regedit.exe ,RUN IT ofcourse then follow this steps.

1.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
2.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
3.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft
4.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT
5.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

And Thats Were We Do 1 Little Thing

Open the Value Named "Shell" and Modify its Value Data From "explorer.exe" to your litestep directory and its exe.

Example "C:\Program Files\LiteStep\litestep.exe" .. im not sure for the dots and the name of folders ,I`m not home at the momment..

But please notice ,you sould make a shortcut to LiteStep.exe located in the Program Files\LiteStep Directory its self and not Desktop and other places.

Oki .. we have the Shell Changed ,sould work.
Reboot You Machine
Soon as you`re on the desktop right lick on the desktop and left click on File Manager
(If the Explorer Shell Still Pop`s up ,the solution is simple .

Open your Regedit Again, and it sould be right were we where before, gist change the path of Shell again to your litestep and then USE LOG OFF ,wich is more simple this time .. and no need to reboot now .. gist do that step it sould work.

If you want to run back maby in the future back to Explorer Shell ,change it back to its original path "explorer.exe"

PS : I was tryng million ways on my laptop and desktp pc ,non-worked this one gist suprised me and it did,i`m really happy that i can use litestep again and enjoy some wonderfull themes made by extraordinary ppl like Aaron-A-Arts.

Thank You
Kuba

I will make a Video ,w/ proof soon as i get back from holiday ,6 days left xD Tenerife Huh :)

if you've never heard of rar..
rar is similar to zip. just a compressed folder basically.

google 7Zip and download that. it is free and quickly decompresses a multitude of formats

hmmm.. ok, everything in litestep is achieved using "modules". modules come as a dll file and most often will download/install automatically when you apply a theme. follow me? the default install directory is c:\litestep\modules

so if you need to install a module manually you download it and put it into the modules directory. then recycle litestep and the theme should see the newly installed module.

xPaintClass is the exact same situation only you want to put the xpaintclass dll in the litestep folder, not the modules folder.

still with me? if you rightclick and point to litestep>edit config>theme.rc it will open the currently loaded themes main config file so that you can see which modules are include. its plain text so just read it.

litestep takes some configuration. generally speaking, if you know how to access system settings, and access app settings from inside an app then you should be able to intuitively configure litestep but from time to time you will need google for help.

these links are the most relevant and useful pages to download and learn about modules

with that theme you get two folders in a rar. both those folders are complete themes. so, just put them in your litestep themes folder
right click>litestep>themes folder.
then, right click>litestep>change theme>refresh list.
then, right click>litestep>change theme>pick a theme
=)
on different litestep packages the right click menu hierarchy may vary, but it should be pretty close to that.
